There is something about Retreating Away to Ohui that calms, soothes and relaxes the body, mind and soul – as soon as you get out of the car. The pace of life is slower and you are forced to conform.

With no clocks, no WiFi, no cellphone reception, you are faced to be present in the moment. No distractions. There is nothing to rush to, no to-do lists to tick off, no jobs to accomplish other than being present in the now and to enjoy. It provides space and a clarity that comes with it and I know I’m not the only one who feels this.

Active Soul Retreats Away to Ohui every year and more often than not we have people re-booking with us. Our women returning use the weekend as a benchmark and opportunity to reflect on the year gone by, achievements, hurdles and how far they have come.

It is easy to gage our our physical benchmarks throughout the year. We can run a set route faster. Or not. We can complete more pressups. Or not. We can lift more, stretch more, hold a plank for longer, run for further. Or not. We can fit into our favourite jeans… or not. These benchmarks are the obvious ones. The not so obvious reflections are personal, harder to acknowledge and require time, space and a clarity that happens only when you open up and are honest with yourself.

Ohui has seen me through a broken relationship, birthday celebrations, milestones along the way, family members I have lost, changes in goals and mindsets, a new love, a miscarriage, adjusting to a new family, a turning point at 40, foggy days, exhausted weeks and so many highlights and achievements… all of which have made me the person I am today. Although these defining moments may have happened outside of Ohui – it is through the space and calm that is Ohui, that I can sit, ponder, reflect and see my journey for what it is and how far I have come.

Now I’ll be honest and say I’m not very good at this, in fact I’m an expert at filling my time so that I don’t have to be. I am more often than not swept up in the ‘What’s next?’ storm and know more than ever, I need to find the calm that Ohui offers in my everyday life.

To step back from the whirlwind every so often, for just long enough to catch my breath, enjoy the calm and all it offers. That is my new mission moving forward.

Whatever your reflections hold, be sure to celebrate all of them and acknowledge just how far you have come.. then go forth and conquer, you’ve got this!
